Asbestos and Man-Made Mineral Fibres, MMMF

We are an accredited and independent test laboratory and with 20 years of experience in this field under our belt deliver swift and reliable analytical services of air, dust and material samples for asbestos and man-made mineral fibres (MMMF)

General information

The term asbestos describes a group of highly stable, non-flammable minerals with a fibrous structure. Until the early 90s they were predominantly used in heat insulation material or fire barriers.  Asbestos is also contained in brake linings, clutches, electronic devices, machines and technical installations, heating systems, and, most importantly, in the construction material of numerous buildings. When entering the lungs asbestos fibres may bring on so-called asbestosis, i.e. the hardening and scarring of connective tissue and eventually cause cancer.
Meanwhile even asbestos surrogates such as man-made mineral fibres (MMMF) have been proven to have a potentially carcinogenic effect.

Analytical Services for Asbestos

  • Expert assessment of filters for air tests (indoor air, approval testing, results testing, determine level of contamination in the course of asbestos removals) in accordance with the following guidelines: VDI 3492, VDI 3861 (sheet 2), BGI 505-46, ISO 14966 for asbestos and MMMF.
  • Analyses of material and dust samples for asbestos in accordance with VDI 3866 (sheet 5)
  • Analyses of material and dust samples for respirable man-made mineral fibres, so called „WHO fibres“.
  • Assays of low asbestos fibre-mass contents in powders, powder dusts and dusts by SEM/EDX in accordance with BIA Procedure 7487 (in conjunction with TRGS 517) to test natural mineral resources containing asbestos and the preparations and products made thereof (such as road toppings and tarmac, for example).

  • In December '95, the Ministry of the Environment of Lower Saxony appointed us a centre for the ‘identification of emissions of powdery substances, in particular fibrous dusts (analysis only)¹’ in accordance with § 26 BImSchG ("Federal Immission Control Act").
  • Over and beyond the above, we successfully participated in the two VDI interlaboratory tests on the ‘evaluation of filters in accordance with VDI 3492, Blatt 2, measuring of inorganic fibrous particles – scanning electron microscopy’.
